It was a frustrating time that I don't like to talk about, but I have to because it will help you in your business...

Most of the first year and a half in my publishing services business were spent grinding -- trying to get my business off the ground and just make ends meet.  

I loved books. I passionately wanted to help authors to publish them.

There were months when I thought I wouldn't be able to afford to pay the mortgage on the small home I worked from and would have to borrow the money. Then, I would run some marketing and the money would come in... not in abundance, usually just about what was needed. 

Those months of struggle somehow gave me the confidence to know with certainty that big things were inevitable as I continued to grind, build the business and try to create a better life...

Just a few months before my real success came pouring into my life, I was really unhappy.

Let's be real — you know how it feels to not be where you think you should be... feeling unhappy because you have to say no to things you, or your family, want to do.  

But I had the perspective that if I worked smarter and not harder that rewards would soon follow. They did.

I had started an internet services publishing business called Bookcovers.com.

I had a vision to design book covers for speakers, authors, publishers, consultants and self-publishers that communicated the value of the book immediately to an audience. At that time all of them were publishing books in massive numbers.

One day came this pivotal business life-changing moment...

I got this crazy idea to contact the company who could put me in touch with publishers and authors who had recently purchased their ISBN numbers.  The name of this company was R.R. Bowker.

Publishers needed to get an ISBN number for each unique book title to create the barcode on the back of each book for distribution. 

What I later discovered at the time authors and publishers purchased their ISBN barcodes, that was the exact moment most of them had completed the written manuscript of their books AND needed to design their book cover!

I struck an agreement with the R.R. Bowker company, and in exchange, they gave me access to thousands of publishers every month.

It was amazing.

Our customer conversion rates were high.

We sold lots of book cover design services.


The business took flight and fast! My whole life started to change. Success came pouring in.

This was my BUSINESS. I felt like my father's son again. 

It was three years of steady growth as we added additional services to our client offerings.

We added interior design services and manuscript editing services and our clients ate them up.

Then just like that...

In our fourth year in business... we hit a wall!

We were reaching all of the Bowker author prospects we could reach and converting all we could to customers...

But as I soon discovered... the universe of authors and publishers was pretty much fixed.

So while we were doing well... at about $4 million a year... growing any larger would be next to impossible. 

That's when the feelings of frustration began... and I knew if I allowed it... that it would soon be followed by a feeling of helplessness

The stagnation persisted... my frustration grew... 

We tried doubling our marketing outreaches... revenue stayed the same.

We tripled them... revenue stayed the same.

A feeling of doom re-entered my heart and mind daily. The light-hearted conquering demeanor of this once carefree entrepreneur turned... well... serious. 

We were at par with several competitors... and I we were starting to lose ground to competitors. I needed to do something very different... but I had no clue what that was.


On Tuesday afternoons I'd drive to Barney's coffee to brainstorm with myself using mind maps... index cards... anything that would give me an edge or a new perspective on my present situation.

One night I was so frustrated by lacking a solid solution... that my Dad took me out to buy me a muffin and soft-drink to talk through it.  

He was so good with me.

“I don't know a Margaret...” I said.

Feebly, I said... “It's 4PM... SURE. (and we laughed)”

I answered... “ALLEN D'ANGELO!”

The next voice I heard was Margaret., the owner of a book fulfillment company in New England... 

“Hello Allen,” Margaret said in a soft calming voice with wonderful overtones.

Well... I won't relay the entire conversation... but here it is in a nutshell...

She called to ask me for referrals to my publishing clients so that they could become her customers for storing and shipping books — fulfillment services.

She called me to try to convince me to collaborate with her company on referrals.

The call took a very interesting turn, when I asked her if she was happy running her fulfillment business.
